After last week's CINEMA COFFEE with 1961's FANNY (read "Don't cry on the rolls" here), and having mentioned Charles Boyer numerous times before, with a mention of serving up CLUNY BROWN in a CINEMA COFFEE Chat in the near future (UPDATE: The future is here with my CINEMA COFFEE blog piece on CLUNY BROWN), it occurred to me, when it comes to Coffee and Cinema, Charles Boyer really deserves a CINEMA COFFEE blend of French Roast of his own:
... Whew! And believe me, I could name a lot more, and those would just be the recommends!
If you don't get the picture, we loved Charles Boyer. As Lucy Ricardo says:

Yep.
But one film, aside from CLUNY BROWN, which will get its own CINEMA COFFEE time as the holidays are upon us (paired with Coffee AND Cookies ... that's another #ForMyMom story of its own we'll discuss then when we talk "Cluny"), I'd like to pair with Un Café is, HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT (1937), starring Charles Boyer and Jean Arthur, and featuring Colin Clive and Leo Carrillo.

Charles Boyer and Leo Carrillo HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT (1937)
This was a film TCM had aired (new to me then for the first time) somewhere back in 2011. With my mom and I being Boyer fans, I'd always be on the lookout for any upcoming Boyer films (along with my other Classic Film/Actor favorites) whenever I'd get my fresh NOW PLAYING GUIDE in the mail ... "Come Back, Little Playing Guide" (said in my Shirley Booth voice of course).
It's from these TCM scheduling watches (and some through other networks that will remain nameless ... but HOW TO STEAL A MILLION, I'm lookin' at you), I was able to discover many of the above-mentioned Boyer films, along with BREAK OF HEARTS and THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT (both with Boyer and Katharine Hepburn),
THE BUCCANEER,
UNE PARISIENNE, CONFIDENTIAL AGENT, IS PARIS BURNING?, THE COBWEB, FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE, LOVE IS A BALL, BAREFOOT IN THE -- STOP! WAIT! TURN AROUND -- it just struck me like a match! With the exception of a select few, I have seen all of Boyer's films!! What a way to go! -- No, no, he wasn't in that, that was only the expression itself, not the film in title ... ahem ... right, carry on. |
Through these scheduled watches, along came HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT, which, if I remember correctly was a film that was shown in place of another film that was supposed to be aired that night on TCM. Quickly, I do remember, we assembled ourselves together to be seated and coffee'd up before Robert Osborne began his intro ... We were NOT disappointed.
HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT (1937)
HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT holds such a heavy and deep film memory for me when I think of my mom and Movies, because we had everything in its perfect setting for a film such as this, without knowing much about the film itself going in. Only it was Boyer, whom we'd trust with any film watch, and that it was on TCM being introduced by Robert Osborne. Really, you don't need more ingredients than that. However, when a film itself strikes you somewhere you hadn't expected, that's a true blend of Cinema. You know the kind ... the films that stay with you no matter where you go from there in film genres, likes or dislikes. that one film will always walk just a little higher than the rest in your film library of memories.
I don't want to ruin anything for you if you have not seen it, for those who have followed along with me, by now you should know, that's not my style. However, I can't go without saying, you may get struck, as we did, in curious wonder if this film wasn't somewhat an inspiration for TITANIC (1997) ... My Mom and I gave that quizzical look to one another like: Jack? ... Rose? -- Cale?!

... But with all kidding aside, this film is a spark of capture in months as we are in now. When films are enjoyed with couches, ottomans, darken ambiances, bundle blankets, your screen glowing with romance and drama, mixed with a bit of comedy relief, in this case provided by Leo Carillo, and of course ... Coffee. Or like we'd like to do in the Fall/Winter months, half and half. A cup blended with half made Hot Chocolate (I dare you not to hear POLAR EXPRESS when you hear the words "Hot Chocolate") mixed with half made Cappuccino ... in our favorite coffee mug of course:
In short, don't sleep on the job next time you have to opportunity to watch this gem. In fact, it's worth going to find it, than just waiting for it to find you. Now go make some History guys 'n dolls ... #ForMyMom.
