It was adapted by Irving Caesar in 1929 from the Austrian song "Schöner Gigolo, armer Gigolo" written in 1928 with music by Leonello Casucci and lyrics by Julius Brammer. Among other places, you can hear the song in a 1933 Betty Boop cartoon. As well as see the film of the same name in 1931 (other names of the film include: Dancing Partner or The Princess and the Dancer) starring leading actor William Haines.
