NEWSFLASH WITH BETTY GREY
BEEP, BEEP, BEEP ...
She is considered one of the titans of twentieth-century Black literature. Celebrated anthropologist, journalist, essayist, playwright, and bestselling novelist. But she is most known today for her 1937 novel “Their Eyes were watching God.” She attended Howard University, 1923-24; Barnard College, B.A., 1928; and graduate study at Columbia University. Known to be feisty, a little raunchy, bodacious, who didn’t care about you or what you thought, it is said that “she could tell you to go to hell, and make you enjoy the trip …” She, herself wrote in 1928:
"I am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow dammed up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. I do not mind at all. I do not belong to the sobbing school of Negrohood who hold that nature somehow has given them a lowdown dirty deal and whose feelings are all hurt about it... No, I do not weep at the world -- I am too busy sharpening my oyster knife."
... She is Zora Neale Hurston.
BEEP, BEEP, BEEP ...
American jazz singer Maxine Sullivan known for making famous the Scottish song "Loch Lomond" broadened her range and ventured toward pop music with recordings such as "I've Got the World on a String," "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams," and "I Got a Right to Sing the Blues." Sullivan and husband John Kirby worked together on a radio program for CBS called "Flow Gently, Sweet Rhythm," which would be the only black hosted show on the radio, and it would remain on the air for two years.
