Despite the recognition this silent film receives amongst institutions, preserved by The Library of Congress, beautifully mastered (35mm film elements via American Film Institute Collection and 16mm film elements via Pearl Bowser Collection), THE SCAR OF SHAME (1929) is a film that gets less recognition than other Black silent films or silent films in general. The look and feel of the film—the style, the storyline, and the setting—is fresh and contemporary. You recognize these characters; you have seen a version of them in person. A race film not about race, THE SCAR OF SHAME exhibits issues faced today. Abuse, social class division, deception. It may be a silent film, but it reads like a television/streaming serial. Which may not be what you think of when you hear silent film, but through its sophisticated delivery, THE SCAR OF SHAME speaks vividly to the viewer. |

A DOMINIQUE REVUE PRODUCTION
The Black history of Little Africa—an all-Black community in Louisville, Kentucky, during the beginning of the 20th century—that thrived and sustained through its own developments, from housing to shopping, until its demolition in the early 1960s, is explored and discussed by one of its own former residence, Howard Breckenridge, who not only was part of the community, but whose family, the Breckenridges, were one of the first to settle in that area, helping mold Little Africa of Louisville, Kentucky into what it became. Now, a place in history.

Produced by Frank Capra, this 1944 propaganda film was written by one of the Black artists who led the Negro Theatre Unit of the Federal Theatre Project in 1936. Actor, screenwriter, film director, and social critic Carlton Moss. Moss—who, as shown, also acts as the pastor in this film—was one of the Black artists who led the Negro Theatre Unit of the Federal Theatre Project, taking control of the FTP along with two other Black artists, Harry Edwards and Augustus Smith, in 1936, when Moss "redirected productions to emphasize social inequity and resisting injustice." |
I first saw this as a special premiere on C-SPAN several years ago (2013) with my mom . . . I never forgot it, and I continue to reshare it annually, if not more so, during the year.
