For a long time I've been wanting to post a list of films I've watched over the course of time when faced with a tragic moment in my life, the loss of my Mom. Many of you who have followed along with me during that time and before, know I talk about my Mom a lot, and it's something I don't think will ever change. I still miss her everyday. There isn't a day that passes when something doesn't come up that reminds me of her, want to share with her, and even at times reach for her in a brief second, only to remember, she's not there. I'm sure now, having listened and learned, I'm not alone in this. A lot of people have been touched by this same tragedy of loss that we all will have to face in our journey through life. None of us will be untouched by this personally.
When I lost my Mom, it was unexpected, which makes it all the more tougher to fight through. Tougher to find something to turn to "un-numb" yourself. And being around people at the time, for me, wasn't the answer. I wasn't in tune socially. Everything just became a blur. The only thing I could think to turn to were my love for classic cinema. Any classic cinema. It didn't have to be an A-list picture, with an A-list cast, I just needed something that would keep going, keep playing.
Every night, early in the morning, when I couldn't sleep (which was often), while working on something, or during *any* down time, and particularly in the beginning when I just shut myself up in my room wanting to distance myself from everybody and everything, I'd find a new film to watch, click on it and began building what I guess you'd call my "Film Therapy" to cope.
During that time, I realized, with the endless number of classic films I've seen during the span of my lifetime, there were still many, many, many films out there I'd never seen before, not even on my main source to classic cinema growing up TCM. And a lot of these films I discovered were just as good as A-list films with A-list actors that you're not only quite familiar with, but watch all the time.
Even then knowing my days were sort of melting on into another, with this blur of what was happening being carried with me along the way, I began to write down all the movies I was watching to create a list so that I'd remember all the films I've watched in the times ahead. Hoping one day I wouldn't feel as numb anymore.
In short … a long time later … Below I've provided that list of all the films I watched during this darkness in my life. A few of them I have seen or grew up with, but wanted to revisit be it because it had been a while, or because I remembered it with fondness. Those I'll have in typed in red. The films I found delightful, I will mark with an asterisk (*), and will underline the films I would highly recommend.
So, for anyone who is facing or have faced a moment like this, this list is for you (as you might be able to tell, I tried to group them in a similar bundle according to actor):
